From the recording Rock. Paper, Tree
Lyrics
“The Letter”
Another sleepless night, I focus on the words
That have been given to me
What can this mean? What can I believe?
Rock, Paper, Tree
Once again I slip into the grey
Between a tree and a trance
Walk along a rock wall to a sunlight tree
An old man sits by a rock
Putting sheets of parchment into a metal box
Seal it with a lock
A hot summers day coming to an end
Or so it seems to me
The box goes in the rock wall
The cover stone lights up
Between the shadows from the tree
Waking once again I write down some notes
And sketch what I did see
The shape of the rock, the shadow from the sun
Rock, Paper, Tree
Now I sit and ponder, try to solve this puzzle
A few things come to me
For a tree to shade the rock wall
It must be fairly high, most are quite low
One to keep out people, not keep in a flock
In a place long ago
The angle of the shadow, near Mid-Summer Night
To a meridian must be
Time to search and wonder, if this place can be
Rock, Paper, Tree
So now on a plane I sleep the night away
And wonder what will be
I walk along the rock wall, sun low in the sky
But there is no tree
I find a rotting stump and catch my wind
Looking at the wall I see
The cover stone or at least the shape seems right
I move it and what do I see?
A rusted metal box, I break off the lock
And look what is inside
The sheets of parchment paper with fading writing store
From times other side
So now to read the words, granted to me
Passes across the winds of time
What will they say? Whose are they?
Why has this been given to me?
One step closer to solving the rhyme
Rock, Paper, Tree
